The Health Hazards of Candies

Candies are such substances that are loved by all from eight to eighty. These colorful foods bring in instant delight when popped into the mouth. Nevertheless, we should be aware of the various health effects that might occur when candies are consumed regularly over a prolonged time. 

There are two basic ill effects that candies are known to cause as described below:
•    Dental Cavities: The basic constituent of candies is sugar. Sugar is a key factor for building up dental caries or cavities. It is because the many of the bacteria in our mouths thrive on sugar. The sugar when metabolized by these bacteria would produce acids as a by-product. These acids are extremely dangerous for tooth decay. Some candies consist of acid drops, which would increase the chances of tooth decay even more. It is highly recommended to brush or wash mouth thoroughly post candy consumption to avoid any tooth complications.
•    High Glycemic Index: The high sugar content of the candies makes them quite high in the scenario of glycemic index. This factor of Glycemic index increases even more when the candies are of fat-free or low-fat category. This feature makes the candies not only harmful for the diabetic patients but also to the non-diabetic healthy individuals.

The other factor that makes the candies quite harmful is their lead contamination. Nevertheless, the lead content has been hugely reduced by the manufacturers. Deaths due to choking on candies have also been reported amongst children. One should be very careful about candy consumption.
